DermaValidator – our new, improved ultrasound scanner

If you use Beauté Pacifique products, you have probably also had an ultrasound scan of your skin. For more than a quarter of a century, we have documented the effect of our products by giving customers a complimentary ultrasound scan of their skin to reveal the in-depth condition of their skin. In this way, our consultants can create a tailor-made skincare programme to suit the needs of each individual customer.

Our ultrasound scanners are based on our own scanning technology – used too by hospitals and dermatologists worldwide. The technology behind and incorporated into the scanner has been developed over many years. Now in 2023, we are launching a new and improved model – the DermaValidator.

DermaScan vs. DermaValidator 

The DermaValidator makes it now even easier to help people have a better quality of life through healthier skin because the DermaValidator ultrasound scanner provides a sharper and even more detailed image. This enables us to measure the amount of collagen in the skin even more precisely.

The origin and development of the scanner

The journey towards DermaValidator actually began way back in 1986 – 11 years before Beauté Pacifique was founded. At that time, Beauté Pacifique’s founder Flemming Christensen was working to develop scanners for use in the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions, such as birthmarks and skin tumours.
But in order to diagnose skin disease, it was first necessary to understand what healthy skin looks like. While working with this, more than 30 years ago, Flemming’s passion for treating and helping maintain healthy skin first arose. As he discovered, healthy skin appears in thousands of different ways. No matter whether skin is young or old, sun exposure, sun damage, etc., all leave their mark on it.

With his scanner “under his wing”, Flemming reached out to several international stakeholders in the cosmetics industry in the hope that they would join him on the journey to create skin-enhancing products for healthy skin. But after numerous invitations and presentations, it became clear to Flemming that knowledge was clearly only being shared in one direction.

From here on in, Flemming set about creating Beauté Pacifique. To make a long story short: Beauté’s scanning technology enables us to document the effect of our products. This applies to a range of things, such as sun damage, changes as a result of ageing, etc. Because we can document skin damage and the effects of ageing, as well as the impact our products have after a short period of use, we are able to help our customers have a better quality of life through healthy skin.

Beauté Pacifique is headquartered in Hadsund in Northern Jutland. It is also here that our research department, with their high level of expertise, has developed the DermaValidator  working in close collaboration with research institutions and thought leaders from all over the world.

DermaValidator has been developed drawing on over 30 years of experience and understanding of ultrasound. Its unique technology makes Beauté one of the leaders in the use of ultrasound for the improvement of skin.

How the ultrasound scanner works 

Ultrasound is sound waves that you can neither feel nor hear. They travel down through the skin, and once they meet tissue, the sound waves are reflected back as an echo. The echoes are captured via the scanner’s advanced technological equipment, which transforms them into an image on the screen.

Taking a moment to geek out, the right way to put it would be that there is actually an ‘ultrasound crystal’ in the scanner that converts electrical impulses from the scanner into the ultrasound waves that travel down through the skin. The crystal helps to send out the ultrasound waves and helps to collect the echoed reflections from the skin, transmitting them onto the screen.

Most people are familiar with ultrasound scans from pregnancy and other hospital examinations. Well-known, traditional ultrasound equipment used for these purposes has a frequency of 10 Mhz or lower. In contrast, our specially designed scanner has a frequency of 20 Mhz or more.

The lower the Mhz, the deeper it is possible to see; however, lower Mhz have lower resolution and reveal less detail.

The higher the Mhz, the higher the resolution, and the more detail you see. But the scan does not go as deep down.

An ultrasound pregnancy scan is made at around 2 Mhz, which means that the waves reach deep down into the body but do not provide highly detailed images. However, when we scan the skin with our DermaValidator, we reach a depth of around 3 mm – which corresponds to the thickness of the skin. Because of this, we can see far more details. The scanned image is also shown in colour.

What do the images reveal? 

The images reveal a cross-section of your skin, where we can see the epidermis, dermis and subcutis.

Amongst other things, the different layers tell us about:

• the skin’s resistance,
• the skin’s thickness (whether it is thick or thin),
• the strength of the epidermis (the stronger it is, the more protective it is),
• the extent to which there is any damage,
• Or whether there are any age-related changes.

When you, as a consumer, are scanned

We offer complimentary skin scans in our Outpatient Clinic in Hadsund and at our dealers throughout the country. When you come for a scan, our consultant will scan your left temple*.

Based on the ultrasound image, the consultant will recommend those products that best meet your skin’s needs. We recommend a follow-up scan after a minimum of 3 months, where we can examine the effect of the products.

*We measure your temple, as we want to scan the same place each time so we can make a better comparison with previous scans. If we scanned the temple on your first visit and then your cheek on the next, we would get two very different, incomparable images.
