The Buddha says that consciousness lacks an essence because the nature of consciousness is to have an essence. Because it lacks essence, any particular thing. And consciousness doesn't lack a particular thing because consciousness is in the nature of world to lack a particular thing. For example, when a person dies, the mind dies too — mind's essence dies. When some of this mind dies, then more of consciousness dies; is merely something that's part-and-parcel of the "being" that mind lacks in death.
